Timeless Imagination Unveiled

Artwork by Serena Allen-Szatkowski

Artist Statement

Art is an extension of our voice and inner dialogue. It is a way to translate complex thoughts into a visual language. My work is inspired by the intricate details and symbolism found in medieval manuscript illuminations and other ancient arts. The ornate flourishes, odd characters, and vivid narratives influence my visual style and historical aesthetics.

I gravitate to the rich, layered storytelling found in folklore and classical mythology. These ancient tales don’t only serve as inspiration but give me a lens in which I can explore the effects of history in the current era–blending in my personal conflicts, identity, and complexities into ancient imagery to create a new story. By weaving in the contemporary world within historical frameworks, I aim to achieve artwork that is rooted in the context of human history and resonates with the modern viewer.

The creative process seeks to challenge and reinterpret stories of the past and reflect it into a modern context. Classical and ancient styles invoke a sense of authenticity and timeless interpretation which I use to gravitate viewer’s attention as well as welcome them into immersive storytelling. My work takes form in mixed media, anything from digital character illustrations to bronze sculpture and all that is in between. Whatever method I use, I invite viewers into a world blended with myths to memory, fantasy and reality.
